Take Away: Using a RecordSet's properties, methods and events.

RecordSet Fields Count
The following code displays the number of fields in a RecordSet object.

Dim RS
'''Open the record set with something like RS.Open...
Response.Write "Table Field Count=" & RS.Fields.Count

Once a RecordSet object is open, you can use the Count property to cycle through the fields displaying verious properites.

For example:

 For TableField = 0 to RS.Fields.Count - 1
  Response.Write "<tr>"
  Response.Write "<td>" & RS.Fields.Item(TableField).Name & "</td>"
  Response.Write "<td>Type=" & RS.Fields.Item(TableField).Type & "</td>"
  Response.Write "<td>DefinedSize=" & RS.Fields.Item(TableField).DefinedSize & "</td>"
  Response.Write "<td>Precision=" & RS.Fields.Item(TableField).Precision & "</td>"
  Response.Write "<td>NumericScale=" & RS.Fields.Item(TableField).NumericScale & "</td>"
  Response.Write "<td>Attributes=" & RS.Fields.Item(TableField).Attributes & "</td>"
  Response.Write "</tr>"

A dynamic Property object has four built-in properties of its own:

  • The Name property is a string that identifies the property.
  • The Type property is an integer that specifies the property data type.
  • The Value property is a variant that contains the property setting. Value is the default property for a Property object.
  • The Attributes property is a long value that indicates characteristics of the property specific to the provider.
