Our church is using Paradox11 in a mixed-system environment (MS Server 2000, Macintosh desktops). We use a commercial package to support a membership of about 1500 members and growing. The commercial package runs on Paradox10 RunTime and is hosted on the server. My job has been to develop a parallel custom application on Paradox11 that shares the basic tables from the Churchsoft application to support an office staff of about 8 people using macintosh desktops. I began with no knowledge of Paradox and after 2 years of study and work, we now have a system that supports 8 custom applications in a multi-user environment. These custom applications use the table structure from Churchsoft but run independently on the server as separate, multi-user sessions.

I learned a great deal about Paradox from the web-based Prestwood chapters from Mike's book. I'll be posting from time-to-time on our church project in the hopes that others may benefit from my experiences and frustrations. I'll also be looking for ideas to avoid "reinventing the wheel".

Hi Tom,

How's the Paradox church app going? Is it still up and running?

Hi Mike,

It's been 3 years since I updated you on my project here at First Prez.  Lots of changes.  My efforts are called "FirstAssist" which is a custom Paradox 11 app running on a terminal server and an SBS 2003.  Tables are on the SBS and "First Assist" runs on the the terminal server.

The church shares the TS and the SBS 2003 with a co-located, church-owned company with about 6 users.  The church also has about 10 users, but only 4 are very active.  Church users are running RDP (latest MS version) on their Macintosh desktops to access FirstAssist.  The other company users are PC-based with mapped server drives and some applications running on the TS.

With this many users on the TS, I have seen an increasing delay/latency for church users which is very frustrating.  I have asked our consultant to upgrade the TS RAM from 2 to 4Gb to help the delay and latency problem.

In the meantime, I have tried various BDE settings in an attempt to "fine-tune" FirstAssist.  Here's the current settings.  If you see something amiss with these settings, please let me know.  Appreciate your support and the new web site is awesome.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the interest.  The project continues to grow and mature as I learn more and as other office users migrate from FileMaker and Excel.  I'm currently working on various sub-group programs such as Women's Ministry, Men's Ministry, Youth, Singles, Small Groups, etc.  The pattern for each sub-group is pretty much the same, but there are a few challenges.

We moved the church last August and installed a Windows Server 2003 and Terminal Server on a new network.  The terminal server is running the application and the Server 2003 handles the tables and queries.

We were first inclined to change out the macs for pc's, but not now.   We're using Paradox11 Runtime on the Terminal Server and it works just fine.  Because our Paradox application runs only on the TS, we have no need to upgrade the operating system until Microsoft stops supporting it.  The mac terminals use Remote Desktop Connection to access the Terminal Server.  Works great.

I also developed a separate Paradox application for our worship director who has to arrange the music for each Sunday service.  It's almost finished.   It uses a muti-tab form and several tables.  The master table contains all music titles with associated info and the other two tables are 1:many (dates played) and themes)

This has been a tremendous learning experience for me, but most of all, it has turned into a true ministry.

Again, thanks for your interest.

Aloha,

 Tom Howes

Tom: That's great. It's nice to hear a good success story.Cool Feel free to post any questions you have.

Just curious, do you get paid for this or are you doing this as a favor to the church?

Tom,

It was so refreshing to find there are others out there that use Paradox for church record keeping.  However, it has never occurred to me to use it in the music program.  Thank you for the idea.

Hi Ruby,

Yes, I built it about 3 years ago and it now catalogs and archives worship music since 1996.  Included are various search functions.  If you are interested, I'd be glad to share the app.  Tell me about your church and how Paradox is working for you.

Aloha,

Hi Tom;

Thank you for asking about how Paradox is used in our church.  About seven years ago I developed a small database for member records.  It was then and now is very simple as we have secretarial employees that use it.  We live in an area of mostly retired persons therefore a part time secretarial position is usually not hard to fill however that generation is not always adapted to computers as they might be.

We have a need to have church membership records available for genealogy research.  So our database contains all persons who have ever been a member as well as current membership and a contact person for them which seems to be helpful for researcher.

Our membership is about 120, not large and a single computer user.

I also have also used Paradox at work for about ten years.  My firm collects and disburses Property Owners Association Assessments for over 10,000 properties in a resort community.

I am self educated in Paradox but the things I have developed and presently use really wowrk well for me and my company.  I would very much appreciate your sharing your app.  My Assistant at work is also the pianist for our church and she was very excited about your comments.

Thank you again for your interest.

Hi Ruby,

Let me have your email and I'll be glad to share the Music app with you.  It's developed in Paradox 11.  Hope that's not a problem.  Anyway, you could always redo it for your version of Paradox.

Aloha,

Tom
