Lock on Paradox Link to Spreadsheet

Lock on Paradox Link to Spreadsheet in Paradox Setup, Vista, etc. topic (part of our Corel Paradox / ObjectPAL Coding group).

Quick Search: Paradox   Spreadsheet   Lock Paradox   Lock Paradox Link

I have Paradox 11 and Corel X6 with Quattro Pro. Within the spreadsheet I have several links to Paradox tables. Something got corrupted and the system crashed, leaving me unable to open the spreadsheet, From another work station I was able to open the spreadsheet files and disable the links, which now allows me to open the spreadsheet. But whenever I try to re-establish the links the spreadsheet locks up. Otherwise, everything works fine. I have reinstalled Quattro Pro, Paradox and BDE but that didn't help. The work station has Win 7/64 and have tried to restore the OS to an earlier point but the restore utility fails. I'm guessing that I will need to get the HD reformatted and reinstall the OS. Before I make that leap, has anyone seen anything similar or have any thoughts on how to make the DB-spreadsheet links work again.

yes.. the first thing to look for is left-behind lock files.. either in the data folder, or in the folder with the spreadsheet

Thanks Steven G. I often do a search of the server for *.lck files and do a clean-up. But that doesn't solve my Quattro Pro issue.

if the spreadsheet works fine without the links, either the tables themselves (or the indexes) are hosed, or the lock files are hosed.. do you use the tables directly, or just with the spreadsheets?

download my old "remove locks" tool.. run it on the drive where the tables are, with nobody accessing the tables.. it has really simple instructions.. if it finds anything, let it delete them, and see if that let's you link cleanly.. if it doesn't find anything, or you still can't link, then it's the tables, and the paradox repair tool comes next

I have a few comments:

1. Maybe this is too simple of a question but have you re-built the tables?

My thought is;  I have had a few issues where I was able to open a Paradox application, and while id did not experience an error in Paradox,  I knew I had problems because the data that was available to me was incomplete.  Queries would return incomplete data etc. Turned out that the keys on my tables had become corrupted.  The table would still open.

2. Have you tried (if possible) to narrow down the links,  Reconnect one link at a time and gauge results before trying the next link.

3. Have you thought about recreating the table(s) that you want to link?  Move the data from the old table to the new,  then test the spreadsheet links again on the new table.

Thanks for the followup comments. For the current fiscal year I have been using a workaround that is only slightly cumbersome. Links to WordPerfect work fine. So I have a WP page that gives me all the data I need from Paradox and I paste the results into a links tab in Quattro Pro.

In October, I roll over the books to a new fiscal year and will rebuild tables per your suggestions. Will report back on this thread with the result.

Regards,

Bud Jorgensen
