Hi there

For those of you still running Paradox I can tell you, that it runs very well on Windows 10. No errors and very fast and stable. No problems with BDE either. Only problem we have is using PDFCreator printing PDF directly in the code. But only in some cases. Need to check my code for this.

No need to change for anything else due to new Windows version. Atleast we will stick to our Paradox solution as long as we can.

Thanks for your fast response. I saw already the article, but now it says at the beginning:
The Windows Help program is not supported in Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 or later versions of Windows Server. The Windows Help program is available for Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 only.

I tryed the Window 8.1 but it didn't install.

yes, further research in the paradox "community" forums indicates the same thing.. I've seen two message threads that suggest deleting the win10 help exe, and replacing it with an older one.. that worked fine for both members until a win10 upgrade replaced the old file with the newer one, again..

I'd guess that the only workaround to that, is to launch paradox in a batch file that replaces the help .exe each time..

Hi,

Just confirmation if any is needed that yes replacing the winhlp32.exe provided with Windows 10 with an older version does work.

I used an old copy of the file from an XP machine.

It can be a bit of a pain as you have to take ownership of the Windows 10 version first, then give yourself fullcontrol, then rename it, or delete it if you like. Lastly drop your old version in the folder.

Windows updates will unfortunately put it all back where it started so keep a copy of the old file handy for next time.

It's only a couple of minutes work on those machines you need it on so not really the end of the world, it's just annoying that Microsoft are so dogmatic about not providing it when they let us run the software that it's required for.  Instead they went to all the trouble of creating a non working version to replace it with instead, perfect sense to someone I guess.

thanks.. it's stupid, I agree.. maybe you should make a batch file to fire off Paradox, to keep replacing the file.. there will be windows updates constantly, and you never know how many of them will attack your file

I can see others are running Paradox on Windows 10 but after one of the latest Win 10 upgrades I can no longer install my version 9 ( from a CD ).  Running the setup.exe as administrator doesn't work.  The install starts OK but after apparently installing most of the files it hangs and Task Manager says program Not Responding.  Can anyone suggest anything to try?

Hi,

I've got PD8 running on lots of windows 10 machines though there are a few that I just can't seem to get it going on at all now after updates.  I can see the splash screen for a second then it just disappears, nothing in task manager, just gone.

I've installed PD9 on the problem machines and it seems to run but with some problems so far.

During the install I had to "skip" quite a few files while it did the install.

I've also had it hang during the install as you had.

I ran the install again with "resume" and in my case that fixed it, or at least got it going.

I'm considering shelling out for the latest WordPerfect suite just to get the latest version of Paradox but I'd like to know conclusively if it will work or not first.  I had an online chat with someone at Corel a couple of weeks ago and their answer was more or less "well you can send it back if it doesn"™t work". Not terribly helpful.

I'm still plugging away at mine so I'll let you know if I find anything definite.

Good luck

Bill

I had a number of install issues in P8,   one of them was what you are describing.  to get around it follow the steps below.(the structure of the P9 cd vs P8 maybe different.)

In the root directory of the P8 CD you will find a setup exe and two folders.   Ignore the setup.exe and look in this folder   \COREL\SUITE8\APPMAN\SETUP

You will find another SETUP.EXE there,  run this one as administrator.

fyiw -  the setup.exe in the root folder is a bootstrap to the other.  I think Windows UAC chokes on one setup starting the other.

Bill.. the "skip" is lock files it can't copy from the CD, in the various "experts" folders.. that's normal

you are describing a handful of machines after the Cretor's update, and many machines before that update.. can you confirm that? if so, that's the unfortunate "normal" now

so far, except for Techpart87 above, 9/10/11 are fine.. don't expect anybody at Corel to know anything about this.. they don't, and there hasn't been anyone there who does, in about 15 years.. pdox11 itself is a black box to them

Hi Bill,

Not sure whether forking out for Wordperfect suite would help.  I have X7 and it doesn't even have a Paradox install   Why are Corel so unhelpful, you are certainly not the first person I have heard saying that.  I will try your suggestions, thanks for that.

Hi Bill,

I had the same question a few months ago.
I have 250+ customers using an app developed in PDOX8.  As they move to Win10 Creators edition I had to find a solution.

I converted my app in Aug 2017 to PDOX 11 and have been working on it since.

My #1 problem is with printing, in fact it is problem #1, #2, #3 & #4.
#1 - Reports that have worked for years,  now insert blank pages between data pages when sent directly to a PRINTER. I have done all the logical things (Page size, overhanging data, etc, etc).  They work ass expected if sent to a PDF FILE
#2 - Printers that worked in PDOX8 SP1,  now cause GPF's.   These are mostly printers connected via USB cable
#3 - Changing printers (via code (I wrote) or PDOX dialog) intermittantly causes GPF's. I think this is related to #2. The code has been re-written multiple different ways with no help.
#4 - Problems 1-3 above are for the full version.  The runtime version has even more seroius issues with printers.

Nothing else has caused me to question my decision.

I am hopeful to get these issues solved soon.     BTW, I do have a ticket open with Corel about these issues.  So far the response has been dissappointing.

Any comments or bright ideas would be appreciated.

Download winhlp32-windows-7-x86-x64-komeil.cab:
http://www.komeil.com/download/1230

You'll need to modify the "install.cmd"

Unpack the download (Install.cmd, winhlp32.exe, winhlp32.exe.mui)
to a new directory.

Edit the "install.cmd" and add the following two lines to the 'settings' section:

set WindowsVersion=7
goto :BypassVersionError

(yes, 'WindowsVersion=7' is correct.) Save the file and execute
as administrator.

All should go without error. Paradox help, and every other "Old Style" help
file I've tried, now works exactly as it should!

If a new Windows update breaks this... simply execute the modified "install.cmd" file again.

Andrew.. any WordPerfect Suite, you must have the Professional edition to get paradox on the disk.. the others don't include it

as for Corel, all paradox development stopped in 2002.. p10 was a work in progress, at the time.. p11 is just p10 with the service packs included.. nothing has been touched since, internally

Well gentlemen,  I seem to have found a workaround!!  Much to my surprise!

Tried to install Paradox 9 twice and it hung at the end after apparently copying all the files.  It didn't seem to make any difference whether I selected a repair of a failed installation or a re-install.  Closed the install with task manager and went looking in the Corel directories for an .exe file.

Under C:\program(X86)\Corel\WP2000\programs\        I found pdxwin32.exe and this runs paradox and I seem to be up and running.    Hope this is of some use to others!  Thanks for your support.

Andrew.. you were installing from the Suite 2000 disk, not the P9 disk?

Jeff.. do you know if your printing problems are univeral to the Suite, or if they're just Paradox?

I installed the full suite of WPO X7 sp1 (which includes PDOX 11.0.0.676)   in this configuration  WP and QUATTRO print as you would expect.  PARADOX prints with blank pages between each data page.

I removed WPO X7 - Rebooted

Then installed WPO X8 (which also includes PDOX 11.0.0.676) in this configuration  WP and QUATTRO print as you would expect.  PARADOX prints with blank pages between each data page.

Hi Steven,  No I was installing from the Paradox 9 CD.  I am on a 64 bit version of Win10 but I don't suppose that is relavent to this discussion.  It works and I am OK until Microsoft throws another spanner in the works!   Andrew

Jeff.. nobody that I know, is actually using anything else in the suite.. we all use Word and Excel, right?

in theory, anything that changes is external to paradox.. anything that doesn't work is external to paradox.. nobody has touched paradox itself, or the BDE, since 2002

but I have found that, over time, the p11 install is different, depending on the suite version it came with

Jeff.. very interesting..not asking you to test this, but these are the kind of questions that come to mind.. again, we don't have the testing base we had, many years ago

did it do this before the creators update? does it do this with p9 or p10? does p11 do this on win8 or win7?

here's one question that DOES have an answer.. does it do this with a simple File/Print from an Answer table, etc., or just from the report generator?

Before the Creators update,  all customers used PDOX8  w/SP1 ,  no issues.

I do have a WIN7 machine, So I will test Win7 with PDOX 11,  to see if the issue persists.

I suppose that would tell me it is an OS issue vs a PDOX issue  (my money is on PDOX)

I have clients running p10 and p11 apps on Win10, without this behavior.. these apps all came from p8, and earlier, too.. the issue might be deeper than that.. print-to-file has always been a valid work-around, but identifying the issue is much preferable

OK, I have done quite a bit of testing over the past 12 hours.  this is what I found:

USING PDOX 8  - Historically Win7 & Win 10 (prior to Creators) the report printed as you would expect

After WIN10 Creators - I branched my code and I now have a PDOX 8 and PDOX 11 version.  There a few minor changes in the code.  However the report RSL files are a direct port, no changes.

Under PDOX 11 - the reports print with blank page between data.   The PDOX 8 reports still print correctly.

Now for my testing - All of which is done on a Windows 7 machine:
PDOX 11 produces the same issue with blank pages.
PDOX 8 behaves as you would expect.

This testing was done on duplicate data and reports in separate folders.  It then occurred to me that,  since the reports were a direct port,  I could open up the exact same report and data.  This is where is got interesting..

I used this script tu run the report each time
    method run(var eventInfo Event)
        var
            r report
        endvar
        r.print("portf.rsl")
    endMethod

    First Test
        PDO8 - No problems
PDOX11 - Blank pages between every data page
    Second Test
PDO8 - Blank page after first data page, normal on subsequent pages (which means, because PDOX11 ran the report, something was changed in the report definition)
PDOX11 - Blank pages between every data page
    Third Test
Before the third test I opened the report in DESIGN view, and closed it.  Niether PDOX8 or PDOX11 asked to save changes, so in essence, nothing should have changed.
PDO8 - Will not print the report any longer, Previewing works, then when sent to the printer it states the fonts have changed, but will not print.
Opening the report in design view, clicking save
The report now prints without blank pages,  although the landscape orientation in the report settings has been changed back to Portrait

PDOX11 - Blank pages between every data page

OMG.. run, Forrest, run !!

if the p8 result changed after the p11 run, and the file is unchanged, it's something that p11 did externally.. something in memory changed

you said there are about 250 installations of your app.. how many of them are already dealing with this?

Jeff.. have you seen the Microsoft ProcessExplorer?

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

it's a bit complex, but sometimes it can show you what loaded, what's different, what's hanging up, etc..

I was thinking that maybe, using the two-pane process details, we could find an inherent difference between what loads/run underneath, in 8 and 11, or some related dll or overlay that gets called differently

it's mostly techno-babble, but one time, it led me to a corrupted folder, that led us to a piece of malware.. once we ID'd it on one machine, we recognized it instantly on another

if you can see how it processes that report in 8, then in 11, then 8 again, maybe that will expose what 11 is doing
