PDOX11 over MSSQL (ODBC) - Schema in Table Names
Might anyone here know a way to configure ODBC/SQLEXPRESS under the BDE to return table names without a schema prefix (i.e., tablename rather than dbo.tablename)? Should I be looking at a different SQL DB?  Ideally, I’d like to point the alias that currently references the main paradox database to one referencing tables ported to sql and look at what needs fixing from there.  Thanks to a tool created and shared on codeproject by one of the forum members (thanks Igor!), database conversion to SQLEXPRESS went surprisingly easily, with only a few minor field type changes needed across hundreds of tables. I’m connecting to the SQL db fine from paradox via odbc. That said, I’ll consider a different back end (Firebird? PostgreSQL?) if it means the Paradox app will require fewer changes; I’m dealing with many forms and lots of code and porting the back end is a step toward a full conversion away from Paradox. Thanks! John

Database Diagraming
Hello All, I am looking for advice on diagramming my paradox database/application.. So far my methods have been really tedious. In Paradox it is easy enough to get the table structures out. For forms I open them in Design, use the object editor to get to the event and open that up for editing. I just read through the code to see where the original developer stored data and what other forms or reports he was calling. In Access I would use the object dependency tool to do this type of work. I have not found anything like that in Paradox 9. Is there anything helpful for mapping dependencies in later versions of Paradox? Are there any other tricks you guys have learnered for mapping out relationships and object dependencies when you are disecting other people's work? Thanks, Steve

look at the enum functions.. enumfilelist can give you a list of tables, then scan that list with enumfieldstruct to build a table of field names and properties enumfilelist can give you a list of forms or libraries, then scan that list with enumsource and build a table of your code an "org chart" of what calls what can be simple or complicated, depending on the complexities (or lack therof) of your app

Paradox & Custom ODBC Driver
Does Paradox support connecting to 3rd party or custom ODBC data sources? I have one installed, see it in the BDE Administrator, but can't find where I can connect to it from within Paradox.

Thanks for the quick responses.  The link to the BDE helped me get the ODBC driver setup and I can now see it in Paradox. Thanks!

Access periodically from Paradox to a folder
Hi All, I need to know the way to access periodically from Paradox to a folder and recover the files deposited in that folder to be treated by Paradox. Can you please help me on that matter.  Thanks

there are many ways to make a backup, using backup programs or using paradox itself.. please explain your situation, or your problem don't do it when others are using the files.. when you restore a table from the backup, always restore table.*, not just table.db

Migration from Paradox to Access
Is the following scenario feasible:
  • Keep the existing PARADOX application, but move the data from *.db to MS-SQL
  • Re-program PARADOX-Forms etc. in Access step by step and use the MS-SQL Data in parallel with PARADOX and Access
  • If this is an option, who can support us? Michael

Thank you, Jim! This still leaves me with the question who could give us support for step 1. Does Prestwood offer such support services? Cheers, Michael

Paradox to ODBC SQL Connection Login Screen
Does anyone know of a way to get rid of the pop up login screen when connecting BDE to ODBC SQL server? I have found places that state you can store the login information, but that does not seem to work. Is there a specific ODBC driver I should be using that will work better than the SQL Server Native Client 11 (this seems to work the best for data types and such)?

    Using Index on Oracle
Is there any special way to use the Indexex in Oracle with ObjectPal. , , Seems like I can only use the qlocate method against oracle. Also this method is not very efficient. I call the switchIndex("ORACLE INDEX")method before I try to do a locate. Is there another way to handle this?, , Thanks!

Just adding to this old thread... Not really. qLocate works just fine. You could switch from the native BDE driver to an ODBC driver especially now that BDE SQL Links is deprecated.

no, I have not located something yet.  Killing 2 birds with one stone would be awesome, but Delphi is not an option. Will most likely find some dll thru an Easter Egg Hunt on the web.  I found one today, but have not researched it yet...was just hoping some of my Paradox friends had already been there done that, and could point me in the right direction. You know how it is! ,

Excel 2007 pivot tables, Paradox data source
Just trying to get an idea if anyone else uses pivot tables that use a Paradox table as a data source.  If so, have you had issues upgrading from Excel 2003 to 2007?  We've found that some of the pivot tables won't even open in 2007 and have to be re-created. We also have some users on 2007 already and some that are still on 2003.  If a 2007 user creates a pivot table and saves as an .xls (2003 compatible), sometimes there are issues with the 2003 users not being able to use the pivot table functionality. The simple solution would be to convert everyone to 2007 at the same time, but that is not an option.  We've come to rely on pivot tables quite heavily in some areas of our company, as they provide a lot of reporting flexibility. I was just wondering if anyone else had any of these same issues and what they have done to get around them. Thanks, Doug.

Opening a MS Access table in Script
Hi, Your website has been most helpful.  I have made an alias for my access table in Paradox and put it's tables in the datamodel.  I can run queries, but not open tables from the developer interface. I want to be able to get the table data in script. Below is a script that opens my table successfully.  But, whenever I issue the db.open a Message box pops up to ask for a username and password  (which my Access databse doesn't have). Is there a way to open the Access table without having that message box pop up? var ,     db database,     tc tcursor, endvar,     db.open("AliasName")        ,     tc.open("tableName",db) , endMethod Thanks,   Sue,

So, a wierd thing.... When I open the script for editing, and then run the script, it works great.  If I double click it from the project viewer, it brings up the message box. Any ideas on how to get it to work from the project viewer? Thanks,  Sue,

SQL Server Access via BDE for Paradox
After establishing an alias of MS SQL type in the BDE I am able to connect to the database however when I try to select a table from it via the data model in form/report/query etc I cannot open it - a double click on the list of tables does not open any of them.  There is no error message, but I cannot see individual fields to select them as a result. Any ideas?

yep, I guessed right.. you need p11, which comes with suite 11, 12, or x3.. in any case, you don't need to install everything, just install p11.. you can find cheap copies on ebay most of the time..

    sqlserver2005 / Paradox 9.0 connection
After succesfull connecting to an mssqlserver 2005 through an paradox alias in Idapi.cfg with Driver_type=SQL_SERVER, most fields from the sql server database cannot be shown in paradox forms or be used from within Objectpal. In paradox forms there is no problem in desgin mode, but when running Paradox forms it gives an unexpected error... It is like the ODBC driver does not work for the sql server 2005. Can all the different field types/formats in sql server 2005 not be shown/ used in Paradox 9.0 forms/objectPal or is there any solution to this ?

Setting up an alias in BDE for SQL Server 2005
Does someone have an example showing how to set up an alias in the BDE that will give access to a SQL Server 2005 (Express Edition) database, e.g. the AdventureWorks sample that ships with it?  I have been having a go at this for days and remain stumped! BTW I am totally new to MS SQL and setting up BDE aliases other than Paradox ones - which would perhaps explain my predicament!
