Favorites/Bookmark URL Icon

Take Away: How do some web sites cause an icon to be associated with the bookmark or favorite entry you create for those them? Here we disclose the "trick."

KB100923

You've probably noticed that, with some web sites, when you "bookmark" them, an icon is associated with the bookmark. This is particularly useful if you like to keep a handful of your favorite sites on your browser's "bookmark" toolbar.

So, how do web masters make this happen?

It's pretty easy, and there are two ways to do it.

The first, and simplest, is to place an image named "favicon.ico" in the root directory of your domain. Note: The required size is 16 x 16 pixels.

The other way is a little more work, but much more flexible.

In the HEAD section of your HTML, simply include these line of code:

""
""

By using this method, your icon file(s) can be tucked away in a directory other than your domain's root, and you can provide different icons for each web page, if you like.

Do you already have an image you'd like to use - and want to quickly convert it to a properly formatted favicon.ico? Just go here:

At the above site, you can upload your image and, in a few moments, get back a proper favicon file. You actually get more than that. The result is a zip file that contains additional versions of your image, along with a handy ReadMe file.
