A Free Database From Oracle?

Believe it or not, Oracle offers a free, embeddable database that uses XML for data storage. If you are a C, C++ or Java coder, you might be interested - even excited about this. Oracle has a new, embeddable, database - for free!

It's an open-source database, based on the venerable, old Berkely DB. The old Berkely DB could hardly be called a database.  At best, it was a "record manager."  Like the old Btrieve, Berkely DB didn't know a thing about its own tables' record structures.  That was entirely up to the coder.  But it did support indexing, it was small, fast, and stable.

Oracle, of course, was not the first to build upon the core of Berkely DB.  For years, MySQL has offered Berkely DB as one of its underlying data stores. Oracle, though, has done something different with Berkely DB: They've added support for storing your data as XML. Depending on your needs, this could be a major convenience. Read all about it and download a copy for free at the link, above.
