I love my 3g 20gb ipod. I am thinking about writing some windows software to use with it and was wondering if there were any other owners on here that might want to collaborate.
I don't have one but I've been look at them and the Gateway DMP-X20. At Prestwood Software, we develop for the Palm and PocketPC but I don't know what tools to use for an iPod or what type of fuctionality one can do with it. Can you use it for business apps?
Anyway, I'm interested in following this topic as I'd at least like to know what tools are available and what, in general, you can do with an iPod.
You rock Cheddar. Excellant info. Thanks. So if I understand correctly, you can access the iPod as a drive, like drive G or something and manipulate the files. You want to edit the files a bit to add to how you use it. Is that right?
From my viewpoint, as a software development vendor, it sounds like the iPod is NOT really a good option since it would be better to stick with non-proprietary systems.
technically you cannot program for it. There are some firmware hackers out there who have made some incredible attempts but that is not what I am after. You can use the ipod with windows or mac and on both systems it will also function as a firewire drive. I am interested in writing windows software to interface with the ipod. It's a fairly open system as long as you don't want to copy songs to it. If you add songs then you have to make an entry into the iTunesDB to make it show up as playable. The functionality I am interested in would look at backup management, playlist creation. possible office intergration of contacts, notes and appointments etc...
