From a Visual Basic point of view, you will find that using OLEDB is a much easier implementation task then talking directly to ODBC. OLEDB, and more specifically, ADO is a COM-based data access control that is very easy to use in Visual Basic, Visual Basic for Applications, and VBScript.

If you are concerned with performance, then interfacing directly with database connection libraries (such as DB-lib for MSSQL) would be the best choice. However, most applications do not need that level of performace and the ROI for writing direct connections to databases tends to be very low.
