Database???

EMFrimbo
Rialto, CA
Hello All,
A friend of mine has business and uses Excel
to track stuff. He wants to do things that Excel can't really do and would like to move it into a database. He's thinking of having me do it for him but I write regular old Delphi apps and have never used any of the dbase stuff. I'm certain I could write a custom database program but is this a wise choice? If not, which Database software goes good with Delphi?

Thanks so much :)

Well, I'm not clear whether this is a "favor to a friend" or a "lucrative business contract." Probably somewhere in between? As Wes said, Delphi is great for database applications, but there's a real learning curve. There's more to be learned than can be covered in one or two newsgroup postings. Be prepared to invest in and work through a good book or two.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've seen somebody trying to use a spreadsheet for what ought to be done with a database!

The great news is that, right from Version 1, Delphi has been THE platform creating custom database applications.

The better news is that, with databases, Delphi is downright promiscuious! It'll play nice with virtually every database out there. If you need a "big gun" client-server SQL solution, Delphi's happy to work with Oracle, MS SQL Server, DB/2, Interbase, etc. If your requirements are less ambitious, there are a host of great "desktop" databases that range in price from free to inexpensive.

One of my personal favorite mid-range databases is DBISAM. http://www.elevatesoft.com Written IN Delphi to work with Delphi, it behaves more like a Delphi database should than even Borland's own dBASE and Paradox solutions.

Here at Prestwood, we've used DBISAM for a couple of very ambitious client projects - with smashing success.

Microsoft's MSDE is a free version of MS SQL Server 2000. You'll work a little harder when it comes to hooking it up. Also when deploying your application. One of its main attractions is that an application written to MSDE is easily scaled up to full-blown SQL Server.

A fantastic resource for Delphi database info is Kyle Cordes's BDE Alternatives Guide: http://kylecordes.com/bag/index.html
