Overflow Errors

Overflow Errors in ObjectPAL topic (part of our Corel Paradox / ObjectPAL Coding group).

Hello all,

Just wanted to contribute an answer for all!

For the last 10 days I have been fighting an "Overflow Error".

I was trying to insert data from 2 tables into 1 table. I was getting the error "Overflow:Source is to large(positive or negative) for destination"

At first I tried increasing block size on the destination table. I also emptied the table to create space in it after copying it to a new table name still to no avail.

Finally I went to the Prestwood Knowledge base and did a search for overflow. The search directed me to Mike's book "Paradox 9 Power Programming" chapter 7.

In this chapter Mike explains in a very clear manner as to how Paradox handles numbers in memory. 1. Small Int takes 2k in memory 2. Long Int takes 4K in memory and 3. Number which goes to 18 significant digits(10 to 4930th power!!!) no space requirement given for RAM.

In my code for the particular job I was running there was a number cast as an INT which was limiting memory allocation. After changing the number to be cast as a "Number" all was well.

The biggest thing I learned was to read the error and to understand what it was telling me! As I mentioned I thought that it was a table problem to start with but this as you know now was a mistranslation of the error.

Thanks for the help all!

Thanks for the tip Gary and thanks for the kind words too. Much appreciated. In addition to posting tips here on the message boards, you can post tips to our Paradox tips page (part of the Paradox group here). I mention this just cuz I'm trying to beef up the Paradox group content.
