Hi, I'm SteveC

Hi, I'm SteveC in Convert To/From Paradox topic (part of our Corel Paradox / ObjectPAL Coding group).

Quick Search: Hi m   Hi m SteveC

Just picked up Paradox 11 a few days ago and I must say I'm both impressed and disappointed. I was a PdxDOS & PdxWin developer so I have a number of years under my belt. But I retired in 1996/7 and quit coding. After searching for my muse for several years I decided I really did want to write like I'd been doing as a hobby since 1983.

But after trying for about a year, I really felt the need for an education and decided the best one was private. Unfortunately, that costs a lot more than I can afford. However, a few writers tools I encountered were in paper and were crying and screaming to be computerized. I thought "This could be my financial salvation." So I ordered a copy of WP Office Pro X4 for Paradox.

Well its been a disappointment. When I realized I'd have to practically learn it all over, I figured "OK, I will." I like so many features, like the integrated table restructure, data modeler, etc. But Paradox seems so unstable. My PC is a Dell XPS 420 w/3 GB of RAM so I have the horsepower and compatibility.

Thus I'm led to wonder and asking for your guidance out there:

  • Is there a better database that doesn't cost a fortune and is reasonably easy to use?
  •  What do y'all think of PowerBuilder?
  • Should I keep cracking?
  • Is Corel trying to kill Paradox by underdeveloping the system?

Hi Steve,

What OS are you on? Paradox runs best on XP and pretty darn well on Win 7. It's horrible on Vista.

>>Is there a better database that doesn't cost a fortune and is reasonably easy to use?

Sure, lot's of choses. Paradox is still a good choice, but many use others such as MS Access.

>>Should I keep cracking?

Yes.

>>Is Corel trying to kill Paradox by underdeveloping the system?

No, not trying to kill it but it sure does feel like it. The reality is Corel needs a reason to put some more money behind Paradox. Until then, it will languish as it has over the last 9 years or so.
