Hello from VT

Hello from VT in Member Introductions topic (part of our PrestwoodBoards group).

Quick Search: Hello VT

I have used the prestwood boards a couple of times in the past to find solutions to compatibility issues for the version of paradox I work in and decided it was time to join the board and contribute.

I've been working in Paradox 7.5 since, well 1995..

I Started in paradox 4.5.  After 5 years maintaining and developing quality control apps for my employer at the time,  Database consulting blossomed into a full time carreer for me.  I have been self employed as a freelance developer since 1999.  I have managed to stay in paradox 7.5 with brief forrays into 8 and 9.  Those forays were because a client bought into the newer versions, not because the 7.5 version couldn't do something they wanted it to.  Since 7.5 has been a strong performer all these years, I have not encouraged my clients to move up the ladder yet.  I prefer the borland environment, but would be interested in hearing about advantages corel has added since they took over things.

There are a few new wrinkles with Win7, but so far I have been able to work them out.  I am interested in talking with others to see what problems and solutions are out there.

Hi Sam,

I just wanted to say hello and thanks for your contributions.

Are you sticking with Paradox 7? I am a strong believer that if it works, it's fine. For most of our clients we've converted them to at least Paradox 9. You mentioned that you had a few problems with Windows 7 and Paradox 7. Do you remember what the problems were? In general, we've had great success with Windows 7 and Paradox.

Mike,

Yes, I am sticking with paradox 7 for the moment.  I am having some difficulty with some general issues with later versions of windows.  Mostly for reports / printing.

Having printer's shared from a workstation to other users on a network is often a problem, especially with lower end desktop printers.  I think that is a printer driver issue, probably that the printer driver is not backward compatible to a windows 95 application.  Installing the driver native to the workstation running paradox (using a TCP/IP port setup in the driver) is a successfull work around.  But a printer that isn't network ready (no internal print server, no ip option) can be a problem.

The other one I am struggling with currently is using mapi to open the default mail program and start a new email.  That's on a windows 7 machine running outlook 10.  I think the problem is in windows though, but I haven't found way to edit the windows mapi settings.

Other than these issues, I haven't found many problems I can't solve in paradox.  I also am a firm believer there is no reason to move from the current environment as long as I can achieve the goals of the client.

I still make a decent living in paradox and I have not liked other alternatives I have looked at.  Those other alternatives have pretty much come and gone while my paradox clients have continued to plug along, so I feel I have made the right choice to date.
