Hi,

I have this trivial code on the newValue event of a date field on a form:

var
  tcTick tCursor
endVar

If self.value = ""
   then
      msgStop("Whew !" Tickles completed through   " + string (tickDate))
endIf

It displays my msgStop dialog when it shouild, but when I clear that dialog, Paradox displays its "At end of table" announcement.

I've experimented with no success, but can't figure out how to prevent the Paradox dialog for displaying.

Might you assist?

Many thanks,

Lothar

Hi Steve,

Of course... 'Sorry, but...

I just tried to run the routing to look at Document Source, and got the error "Page header and footer are too tall for the logical page size."

Clearing that brought me to a report design page with nothing on it but two very short vertical lines.

Because it seemed to me that the Document Source report was corrupted, I decided to refresh the Paradox installation files, but that caused no change in what I have just described.

What should I do next to get a look at the Document Source?

Sincere thanks,

Lothar

Hi Steve,

'Sorry I confused matters.

Your request that I provide the rest of the code made perfect sense. And I thought the best way to do that was to look at the Document Source report. But, as I described above, when I tried that, I got the error "Page header and footer are too tall for the logical page size." When I tried to repair the report, that failed, so I tried to re-install the report, and that also failed.

So, I am flailing a bit, and sincerely apologize for having confused matters.

I will post more code shortly (using a different approach to displaying it...)

Thanks again,

Lothar

Hi Steve,

I've made a simple form with the code problem I had tried to describe earlier.

The form displays entries from a tickle table, and the date by which we must attend to the issue listed as a tickle. The form has a button that sequences through the tickle table entries in order by date.

When the form opens, the user sees a dialog that displays today's date, and the user can proceed, or modify that date.

Here is all the code on the form:

method open(var eventInfo Event)
var
dueDate date
tickDate date
count smallint
tc1 tcursor
endVar
;Form opens, user sees today's date, or modifies it
tickDate=today()
tickDate.View("Tickle THROUGH...?")

if not tc1.open(":DATA:Tick.DB")
then
errorShow()
endIf

tc1.SwitchIndex("DueDate")
self.resync(tc1)
endMethod

method close(var eventInfo Event)
endEdit()
endMethod

method pushButton(var eventInfo Event)
var
tc tCursor
dueDate date
nextRecordDueDate date
EndVar
;Button sequences through list of tickle entries
if not tc.open("Tick.db") then errorShow() endIf
tc.setFlyAwayControl(Yes)
tc.endEdit()
if not(tc.didFlyAway()) then
NextRecord()
NextRecordDueDate = tc.DueDate
endIf
endmethod

method changeValue(var eventInfo ValueEvent)
var
tickDate date
endVar

;Field displays the date of the tickle being read.
; tests to see if displayed date value for tickle is after date entered by User when form opened.
if self.value > tickDate
;if displayed date of tickle is later than original date entered by user
then
msgStop("Whew!", "Tickles Completed...!")
endIf
endMethod

The problem is that the test of the date just above never causes the "Tickles Completed...!" dialog to display, and I can't spot the reason it fails.

Many thanks for any assistance in getting me on the right track,

Lothar

Hi Steve,

The table does not appear on the form. There are eight fields on the form that display information from the table. One field displays the date that the tickle is due to be acted upon.

That date field is the only field that has code on it, and you can see its code above starting with the comments

;Field displays the date of the tickle being read.
; tests to see if displayed date value for tickle is after date entered by User when form opened.

And of the eight display fields, two can be modified by the user, the rest cannot. One that can be modified by the user is the date display field that is the only field with code on it.

Thanks for any further help,

Lothar

I just wanted to be sure that the Change Value was actually getting triggered by human interaction :-)

I'll look at your code again in the morning

Hi Steve,

There is no urgency on any of this...

But your comment shows me just how little I understand about this. You mentioned the Change Value being triggered by user interaction, but I may have been thinking about the wrong type of interaction.

I have been thinking of the Change Value firing when moving from one record to another. And that can happen on the form with Edit turned Off.

So, suppose that we click on the sequencing button, and that causes the form to display record #34 (with a DueDate of June 7), followed by record #35 (with a DueDate of June 10.)

The value displayed by the DueDate field on the form will change from "June 7" to "June 10" but, as I have described this situation, nothing in either record will have changed.

Will this situation fire the Change Value event of the DueDate display field? I've been thinking of the Change Value firing when the form moves its display from one record to another, even when the records being displayed have not been modified in any way.

Many thanks,

Lothar

Hi again,

I just read a bit in an ancient Prestwood book and see that the Change Value is not gonna fire unless the underlying table if modified, and that is real progress.

It appears that this should be done with New Value which will fire when the displayed field entry changes, and if I am understanding this correctly pointing the tCursor at a new record will create the sort of display change that will do the deed.

I will try that tommorow, and will report further...

All the best,

Lothar

no, and no :-)

the field level events are fired when the user actually changes the value.. tcursor changes don't count, either..

Hi Steve,

I believe that with your help, I'm seeing light at the end of this tiny tunnel...

I've moved the "Test the Date" code to the NewValue event of the object that displays the duedate of the particular tickle the user is viewing.

That code now looks like this:

;Field displays the date of the tickle being read.
; tests to see if displayed date value for tickle is after date entered by User when form opened.

Var
  tickDate
EndVar

if self.value > tickDate
;if displayed date of tickle is later than original date entered by user
then
msgStop("Whew!", "Tickles Completed...!")
endIf
endMethod

but it fires an error telling me that I'm using an unassigned variable, in this case, tickDate, which is entered by the user on the open event of the page that contains the field that displays the date (and has the New Value code just above.)

This is the code on the page Open event:

method open(var eventInfo Event)
var
  dueDate date
  tickDate date
  tc1 tcursor
endVar
;Form opens, user sees today's date, or modifies it
tickDate=today()
tickDate.View("Tickle THROUGH...?")

if not tc1.open(":DATA:Tick.DB")
then
errorShow()
endIf

tc1.SwitchIndex("DueDate")
self.resync(tc1)
endMethod

I don't know why the date display field does not "see" tickDate. Can you spot the reason for that?

Many thanks,

Lothar

tickDate is defined in the open event, not globally to the form.. put it in Vars, and assign it a value in Init, Arrive, or Open..

so.. you want the user to edit each record, if necessary, then push the button to move on to the next record?

'Sorry, I missed your comments, and may have confused matters.

tickDate is defined as today() in the open event of the page of the form. On that page it is declared as date in the Var EndVar block. At this point, that is the only Var block in which it appears.

Are you suggesting that I declare it as date in an additional Var block, or that I put it in another Var block instead of the one I'm using now.

Also, yes, I want to give the user the option to edit some of the fields in the underlying table, and then to click to view parts of the next record in sequence ordered by date.

Many thanks,

Lothar

Hi again,

I just tried declaring tickDate in the Var Method of the page, but the date display field still does not see tickDate with that modification.

Thanks,

if you declare a var within an event or method, it's private to that event or method.. if you declare a var in the Vars declaration for the form, it's available to the whole form..

you still have to assign it a value.. you're doing that.. var = today, or whatever the user overrides that with

beyond that, there are a gazillion ways to handle the data entry, depending on what the ultimate purpose is.. here, you can force them to look at and validate each record, or you can scan the whole thing at the end, then force them back to the first offending record, if there is such a thing

are you trying to force them to change each date, or just look at each record? if they do/don't change the date, then what?

Hi Steve,

Responding to your last line above -

I'm not trying to force a change in date. I just want to provide the option to make that change. If the user wants to change the date, they do, then they click to move to the next record in date sequence. The only difficulty I am having with this is that I want to test to see if the user has "gone far enough" through the sequence of dates, and so I have the comparison test:

if self.value > tickDate
then
msgStop("Whew!", "Tickles Completed...!")
endIf

That is intended to say, in effect, "You wanted to look at all the records with due dates prior to June 25, 2017 (the variable called tickDate) but now the record you are viewing shows a due date of June 27, 2017. So, you are done.

At the moment, I have tickDate declared as a date only in the Var block of the one page of the form.

Based on your suggestion above, I will move it to the VAR method of the form. Am I understanding that correctly?

Here is all of the code as it now stands:

;ON THE FORM'S ONLY PAGE
method open(var eventInfo Event)
var
tickDate date
tc1 tcursor
endVar

tickDate=today()
tickDate.View("Tickle THROUGH...?")

if not tc1.open(":DATA:Tick.DB")
then
errorShow()
endIf

tc1.SwitchIndex("DueDate")
self.resync(tc1)
endMethod

;ON THE SEQUENCING BUTTON
method pushButton(var eventInfo Event)
var
tc tCursor
dueDate date
nextRecordDueDate date
EndVar

if not tc.open("Tick.db") then errorShow() endIf
tc.setFlyAwayControl(Yes)
tc.endEdit()
if not(tc.didFlyAway()) then

NextRecord()
NextRecordDueDate = tc.DueDate

endIf
endmethod

;ON THE FIELD THAT DISPLAYS THE DATE OF THE RECORD BEING EXAMINED
method newValue(var eventInfo Event)
var
endVar

if self.value > tickDate
then
msgStop("Whew!", "Tickles Completed...!")
endIf
endMethod

Sincere thanks,

Lothar

Hi Steve,

Right now, the tickDate is declared as Date in only one Var EndVar block on the form, and that is in the Open event of the form's single page.

Now, when I launch the form, I get an error on the New Value event of the field that displays the date of the record being viewed. The Unknown Identifier error points to tickDate.

To decrease possible confusion, I will post all of the current code in a few minutes.

Many thanks,

Lothar

you're missing the point.. if you declare a var within an event, it's only there while that event fires, then it's gone.. the event is over..

Hi Steve Commander,

I just moved the declaration of tickDate, and the code is now working as intended.

Please accept my sincere thanks,

Lothar
