I need help.  All of my Paradox 9 runtime users are getting the following error message after I upgraded 3 workstations to Windows 10.  Not all workstations have been upgraded but now they all receive the following error message when attempting to login to Paradox... An error was triggered in the 'qlocate' method on an object of TCursor type....TCursor not opened.  Our server is Windows 2012

Any help is appreciated.

a tcursor is a copy of a table that is being used.. the app isn't trapping for the fact that the tcursor itself could not open the table.. if this is long-standing code, that omission hasn't been an issue

the error message usually has the line of code it bombed on.. even if not, the context could give you an idea of what's happening.. you need to know what table it was, where it was, why it suddenly isn't there or won't open, etc

One of the issues that has confronted me constantly during the last 12 years or so, is that Paradox is very fussy about addresses.

Inevitably, a message saying that a tCursorcould not be opened (table Found) is a message about a faulty address.  Perhaps in migration to windows 10, an address protocol has changed.  If that is the case, the error will be quite widespread.  If it is not, then the error will be in coding that calls the TCursor.

I often find that when I am writing reports, everything goes well. Then when I close the report and later try to open it again, I will get a message saying that it cannot find a table???  I just tell it which table to use and from thereon, it works.  Once again, this is an address issue.

address? do you mean the path? or the alias? in either case, is it sometimes not defined?

yes, the BDE is fussy.. every station MUST use the exact same path, including the drive letter, to access the shared net file.. not merely resolves to the same path, it must be the exact same path.. same thing for any shared data

and, over time, good coding practice can save lots of grief

if not tc.open(mytable) then whatever() endif

if not tc.locate(myfield, mytext) then whatever() endif

access all resources before you start the process, trap for all expected failures, etc.. minimize the potential for mid-process failure that you can't back out of

not aware of any Win10 update issues that can apply here, yet.. an earlier Win10 update disabled the 16-bit BDE completely, but that's not the case here

Thank you for your help.  I see that all of the workstations do not reflect the same NET DIR in the BDE Configuration/Drivers/Native/PARADOX...some say C:\ and others say C:\BDEshare.  I'm going to change them all to c:\ to see if that fixes things.  It's also odd that some VERSION(s) say 4.0 and others say 5.0.

if you say "C drive" for the BDE, I'm assuming some flavor of terminal services or RDP

don't use the root of the drive for that, or really for anything.. make sure LOCAL SHARE is set to TRUE, too.. then there's all the oplocks and caching issues in Windows itself, for another day

the "version" question should be related to the actual BDE on each machine.. BDE 5.0x and 5.2x are interchangeable, for the most part, and the "version" in the config can vary, depending on how and when they were installed.. there are 3rd-party tools to update the BDE and make them all the same, but it's usually a non-issue

Well, many of the workstations were already set to C:\ in the BDE so I just set them all that way... not RDP or terminal services just the root directory of the PC... I guess I'll need to change that?  but to what?

If this helps at all here is the Target of the shortcut I create on each desktop workstation (some with WIN 7 some with WIN 10):

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Paradox 9 Runtime\Programs\PDXRWN32.exe" -c -q -o "F:\Idapi\bde\idapi.cfg" -w "F:\Pdox\PureAir" -p "C:\PdoxData\Private" main.fs

Here is the location of the "Start in" C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Paradox 9 Runtime\Programs\"

Thanks so much for your time to help me on this.

ok.. normal network.. data on F, priv on C.. communication failure here.. paradox itself and the BDE itself can be on the local machines.. the default BDE config is in c:\, but that's from logic that's over 20 years old.. however, the command line shows that they're really using a config on the F drive.. and most likely, the net file someplace on the F drive, too

Still problems.  Only one user at a time is able to login to Paradox and use the files.   I have pointed everyones BDE  NET DIR to C:\BDEShare.  THis location is everyones workstation hard drive.  Is this correct?  I‘m thinking everyones NET DIR should point to the server (F: drive) where the data is located. Maybe here?  F:\Idapi\bde\idapi.cfg

not "maybe".. "absolutely !!!

the net file location must be shared, and every workstation must point to it the exact same way.. just like the data

Oh God.  I changed everyones BDE NET DIR to F:\Idapi\BDE and now no one can get in at all and everyone receives the same error message:  AN error was triggered in the 'qlocate' method on an object of TCursor type.... TCursor not opened.

This error message was not happening before I changed the NET DIR for everyone.

ANy ideas?

Thank you, but Remlock32 does not seem to run.  It minimizes to my tray and I am unable to open it further.  I see the Icon but it does not open or do anything.  I'm running windows 7.

I have manually searched and deleted lots of .lck and .net files on everyones hard drives and the server f: drive to no avail.,  I am still getting the same error message.

Any other suggestions?  I'm really desperate for help now.

wow.. I've never seen it NOT run.. double-click on the zip, double click on the exe.. the only real issue is that drives have become so big, in the 20-some years since David made that file, that it often takes 10 to 15 minutes to run on a large drive

if you know all the lock files are gone, and that it can write to the net file and write to the shared data.. you need to see what table that tcursor is opening, and figure out why it's not working

the error means a table it expected to be open, wasn't open.. it didn't trap for the fact that it couldn't open the table, and it bombed on the next instruction

my only guess is that, since they're all getting the same error, that it's in the initial setup of the app

How do I verify that I can "write to the shared data", as you mentioned above.

Also, how do I repair tables if I can't get into Paradox.  Any utility that could guide me?

they've evidently been writing to that shared folder of data, all along

this has nothing to do with repairing tables.. don't ever touch that stuff if you're not familiar with it

you need to see the script or form that opens the app.. or is it just closing the app automatically?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Paradox 9 Runtime\Programs\PDXRWN32.exe" -c -q -o "F:\Idapi\bde\idapi.cfg" -w "F:\Pdox\PureAir" -p "C:\PdoxData\Private" main.fs

the paradox exe is using the config file in F:\Idapi\bde\

the shared working directory is F:\Pdox\PureAir

everyone has a "private" directory for temp files in their C:\PdoxData\Private

the program starts by running a form called "Main", in that PurAir working directory

if the error has a >> option butoon, click on it.. it'll give a bit more info about the error

No it doesn't close automatically.  I get the Tcursor error message and the Program stays open.  I know that a form called "main.fsl" should open, so I try opening it File/Open/Form/main.fsl... and I get the same "qlocate method on an object Tcursor" error message.

One more thing.  Along the top of the BDE Engine, the following appears:  BDE Administrator C:\Program FIles (x86) Borland\Common Files\Bde\IDAPI.cfg.  But I noticed others workstations BDE shows F:\IDAPI\BDE\idapi.cfg

Which one should it be?

F:\IDAPI\BDE\idapi.cfg

that way, they're all pointing to one file.. if you change anything, you only change it once

in THAT file, make sure it says the net file is in that same folder, too
