When I try to export a database, ( File | Export ) I am getting a cryptic "invalid alias" message in the message bar. No further info. I must have screwed up my settings somewhere and cannot find what alias it is referring to. My :priv: and :work: aliases are working fine.

in an interactive export, you're telling it where to get and to put the files, before you hit the "export" button.. what does it show?

It is not an interactive report. I have a table open, I click File | Export and it immediately displays "Invalid alias" in the message box.

When you click on File/Export, the resultant dialogue should tell you in the first line, the Address of the table you have currently selected to export.  If instead, you get an 'Invalid Alias' error message, then I would think that you could have a corrupted idap file.

You could check that, by first deleting the Alias you think you are using, then replace it.  (Set a new Alias using the same name and address as the old one).  If that dosen't work, my guess is that you need to check the data models on any forms using the table in question.    Check the linking on related tables to see if you can delete and then restore links.  If that shows a problem, then delete and restore the table in the Data Model.

I am sure that the basic problem is an address issue and the steps I have suggested above should expose the villian.

It goes without saying, that before you engage any of the above steps, you should copy/backup the tables and forms involved.

good comments, Ross.. thanks

if we're going into this much detail, cuz it seems to be a really really obscure error.. it's not even in the bug list

anyhow.. also be aware that some developers have written aliases to the registry.. I know, that's dumb, but I've seen it.. never assume, our moms all said :-)

all tables, or just this table? old, invalid alias in a lookup field in the table, maybe?

the permanent alias list you made, if any, can be found in the BDE.. the complete current alias list should be visible in the drop-down of File/Open, etc.. and you can try enumAliasNames, if need be

All tables give the same result. How do I get to the BDE utility in W10?

enumaliasnames returns nothing.

same way as always.. you can search for BDE Admin and it'll usually find it right away.. it'll be under Program Files (x86)

Thanks for your inputs. I tried renaming the idap32.cfg but that made no difference either. What other config or ini files have I forgotten about? I think we are circling near the problem. Everything looked normal in the BDE utility. I did discover that the same thing happens when I try File | Import. I have a feeling that it is using some sort of alias to get to the ODBC drivers? I also tried to open the table using Quattro (file type Paradox) and I get "Network Initialization Failed".

I need to put my hand up immediately and declare that all of my experience with Paradox (Thirty Years) is defined by a Stand Alone desktop environment.  Any comment I have to make about Alias’ or addresses, has to be filtered through that non net-work context.  Given that, I think you are right Jochen, when you sense that you are ‘circling near the problem’.

I wouldn’t try to rename the idap32.cfg.  There are several files with that name. On my desktop the files are:

PDOX_EN_FULL.bars.cfg
PDOX_EN_FULL.sbar.cfg
Idapi32.cfg in C\ProgramData\Borland
Idapi32.cfg in C\User\AllUsers\Borland
IDAPI32.cfg.ini in C\ProgramData\Borland
IDAPI32.cfg.ini in C\User\AllUsers\Borland

When you save a new Alias, you have an opportunity to choose which file to overwrite.  Nothing will come to grief if you use both available names.

Interestingly, both the PDOX_EN_FULL.bars.cfg and the PDOX_EN_FULL.sbar.cfg have been know to cause grief. They are easily replaced.

As an aside I am puzzled about why you are exporting a table in this way.  Does the table have a related Form?  Is this regular routine?  What format are you exporting to?

That my dimes worth.

Jochen.. let's back up a few steps

first, the last comment.. "network initialization failed".. same error can commonly come up in paradox.. quattro can't find the path to the net file.. but I haven't touched quattro in about 20 years

enumaliasnames can't return "nothing".. the table should at least have WORK and PRIV in it

Cottage.. there is only one active cfg file at a time.. unless you're actually deploying multiple configurations, depending on which client/app you're working on, having more than one can create oppotunities for confusion

the first two, the "bars" configs, are for the toolbars.. yes, if they get hosed, they can be deleted
