Complex report filter

Hello again,
I need to create a filter for a report from a client list. The records I want to filter have a string that's common in all the fields I want to filter. I want to filter on that specific string using the filter function in the report. I've tried several operators and either come up with nothing, everything, almost everything and then some or everything but. I even tried the ..*** used in search strings within a table.
I'm sure I'm missing something.
Thanks,
Karen

are you filtering in the table itself? using the basic Tools/Filter function? using SetGenFilter? an index? a query?

I'm trying to filter a particular field within a report using the basic filter function. I have a customer ID that contains "FDAT . . ." with FDAT being followed by other data. So FDAT is common in each record. I do this with other reports, but looking for one specific string. This one has several entries that begin with FDAT. I was trying to figure out wildcards--i.e. FDAT {a-z} or something to this effect.
Hope this helps.

> using the basic filter function
as previously asked, which kind of function are you describing? interactively? in your app?
