Hello,

I'm here because Paradox 9 Power Programming inspired me to look at something I did in '97.

Thank you Mike Prestwood. Like the book. The content and organization appeal to me.

At work, I write Crystal Reports on MS SQL 7 based property management systems developed with Powerbuilder. And take care of two point-of-sale systems on SCO boxes. And time-clock systems on SQLAnywhere on Netware 4.1.

At home I'm making my acqaintance with electronic documents. Trying to figure out an easier way to move content between my Win CE with HPC Office Pro, WordPerfect Suite 9 and MS Office 97.

Will attack PDFs and text documents with hypertext on the CE first.

If anyone's interested, I have a working process by which I move Pocket Outlook Contacts (Win CE) to Outlook 98 on my PC, then to a Paradox v.7 *.db.

I'll try to contribute something.

Thanks,
Brian P Kim

Brian:

Thanks for the kind words on the book. Your projects sound interesting. Moving your Outlook contacts around sounds particularly interesting. Could you post an outline of the process? I'm curious as to what process you go through.

No problem. Hope it helps someone else. I guess I've never outgrown the community spirit of the old CompuServe forum days. I remember when there was less "How do I do this?" as compared to "Try this, maybe you'll like it."

1) {HP Jornada 820, Pocket Office 3.0 (w/ Pocket Outlook)} to Outlook 98 via Active Sync (it worked with CE Service 2.11 also).
2) Then, export to tbl2.dbf (to maintain Notes) without mapping fields.

3) In Paradox, import tbl2.dbf to tbl2.db. (Comes over with every field the same size.

4) Outlook 98 has twice as many fields as Pocket Outlook, and I want to change field lengths.

5) I have an empty table with the structure I want. I copy the empty table to tbl3.db. Then "add" tbl2.db to tbl3.db. This takes care of field lengths.

6) Finally, I query tbl3.db to eliminate the empty fields and create a "lastname, firstname" field which in my Answer table called tbl4.db.

I've tried scripting (3)-(6) ..., but I'm still doing it manually.

Hope that gives you the idea.
