Kylix for Linux

Does this mean that Kylix will not run under AIX or Sun systems? Or is it just not supported. Forgive my asking, I don't do enough in any of these areas to realize any real differences.

So far Kylix is just for Intel-based Linux. Borland has hinted that there will be future development of Delphi/Linux for other platforms, and there have been strong hints that Solaris may be next. But it will take much more than "minor modifications" to get there.

Excellent. Thanks for this reply, Scott. But I would like to go ahead and make sure I am not misunderstanding.

Kylix is for Linux. but you say it would run when there is a QT library setup. My clarification question is this: If i installed Kylix Open Source (as an example) on a Sun box - assuming it has QT library - could I be using Kylix as it stands today, or are their actual modifications that need to be made to Kylix before that could happen.

I guess my question is "Is Kylix for Linux because of how it is Marketed, or is it theoretically possible to support these other systems , but with slight modifications to what already exists?"

Excellent. Thanks for the clarification. Well the good news is I got access to a Linux machine today, so once I verify the dist. is ok, I'll be golden.

Now I just have to learn how to use it(Kylix that is)... Big Grin! hehe

I'll be back...

Not a silly question at all. Big Grin!

The same question came up during the keynote address at the BorCon last week, as well as in the "Meet the Borland Team" session.

The response was "when there is a market need". The Borland folks didn't say "yea" or "nay", but they did mention that a Solaris Kylix product is being considered.

The bottom line answer is "wherever there is a deployment of the QT library." That's why CLX applications are compatible on Windows and Linux - because the QT library was already written for Windows when Kylix development began.

So, the Borland folks pointed out that since there is a QT library for Solaris, that Kylix for Solaris only lacks a market base.

As for AIX, I'm sure the market is there (considering how many tens of thousands of RS computers IBM has shipped), but I don't know if the QT library exists for AIX.

Also, consider this. There is a QT library for Mac OSX... Roll Eyes
