My compaq crashed
please tell me how I can install windows 98 from dos without formatting my hard drive. DOS appears to work fine, and I have my Windows CD plus a restore CD that restores all the software that came with the computer.
What I don't want to lose are some of the files in MY DOCUMENTS. If I can get windows intstalled then I can use my CD burner to back up those files. PLease let me know if there is a way to install windows from DOS without losing these files.

The answer is yes. Basically you just need to run the install. Pay attention to the setup and when it asks to reformat and/or partition, select skip or no. So now the trick is getting the Windows 98 setup files off the CD.

  1. If your motherboard bios allows you to boot from CD-Rom, then just set it to do that and put the Windows 98 CD in you CD

  2. Do you have any other way to get access to the setup files? For example, on a different medium - zip drive, friends hard drive, etc.

  3. Did your Windows 98 come with a boot disk? If so, boot from that. It should be able to recognize your CD-ROM.
