I have been programming extensively with ASP (vbScript) linking to SQL Server 2000 for almost 2 years. But for some reason, I've never had to work on a form with quite the functionality of the one I am currently working on. It doesn't seem like it would be that unique, but for all the serfing I've done the past few days, I haven't found an example.

I have to create a data-entry form that will allow a user to enter information like this:

Title: Ultimate Fake Book
Call Number: REF 781.82
And an unlimited number of Songs in this book:
Title Author First/Popular_Line Genre pgNo.
Title Author First/Popular_Line Genre pgNo.
Title Author First/Popular_Line Genre pgNo.
etc., for each title.

I can think of a dozen or so ways of doing it (even creating a textbox exactly like this and parsing the information out of each line)

But, It doesn't seem like that unusual a problem & I'm wondering how it should be done.

I really don't want to build a form with two million boxes for each potential piece of information.

Does anyone know of any sources I could turn to for examples or advise?

Thank you very, very much.

i could see something like this....

the header info should be entered (the non-multiple stuff) and give them 3 text boxes to fill in the multiples...create one button that will allow functionality for save and exit, and another that allows for the functionality to save and add more...

if they choose to save and add more...store the header info wherever(db, textfile, session, cookie) as well as the multiplese they have allready entered (db,text,session,cookie, array)and display it back to them without the ability to edit...and simply give them three more text boxes with the same functionality

That isn't a bad idea, but there is a draw-back:

This is for an index to song lyrics. We are a library & as we get books (and magazines) with song lyrics, we enter the new book into the database along with each song title (with Title, PageNo., Genre(s), (if Musical -- What Musical), Author(s).

Most of these books have 100 or so titles. Even the magazines will have 20 or so.

I'm thinking two simple text boxes (very like the one I'm typing in now) could work if the data were entered as follows:

TEXTBOX_1
Book Name|CallNumber|

TEXTBOX_2
SongTitle1|Author1;Author2;Author3|Genre1;Genre2|PopularFirstLine1;
PopularFirstLine2;PopularFirstLine3|MusicalTitle(if applicable)

SongTitle1|Author1;Author2;Author3|Genre1;Genre2|PopularFirstLine1;
PopularFirstLine2;PopularFirstLine3|MusicalTitle(if applicable)

******************************

Now, my users would hate this (remembering to put the "|" and the ";" in the correct places could drive them mad. But it would work great for me.

Your idea is probably the best. But I should probably have 25 rows of text boxes.

I was just wondering if this is a common problem in Web development circles. It's a common problem of mine & usually results in me using Office for data-entry.

I don't have the choice this time, however.

Are there any good reference books on the theory of Web data-entry?

Thanks!!!
