hi everyone. i would like to know if IB is not even a option to be considered for desktop-database apps? and what about the possibe opts, does bde compensates even with its 15MB of instalation?? and what about access?? i never really considered it, would you recomend it??
i know that the 2 ending questions should be in another forum, but they come in sequence of my first question.
TIA, bruno

hi!!
i know that there are other midleware tools other than BDE, im using IBObjects, but, my question was more about Intebase, than comps. What i mean is that i was told that IB only justifies its use when in a network and being used for more than 5 or 6 users.
But thanks for the recomendatio of that Advantage Database Server, i ddnt knew of its existance, i will research it to see if its worth, and then i will decide wheter for that or for Access!!
Best regards, Bruno.

Your questions are all appropriate in this forum.
The question of InterBase as a desktop database - Local InterBase works great as a desktop database, but what is the nature of the application?
With regards to the BDE - what is your application environment? If it's Delphi or Kylix or C++Builder - you should know that Borland has officially deprecated the BDE in favor of other middleware. dbExpress, IBExpress, IBObjects, ADO - these are more robust and reliable, with less of an installation footprint.
If your app is strictly a single-user desktop, it would be worth your while to consider Access and ADO. The MDAC is freely available (and comes with Windows 2000 and Windows XP), so installation of ADO is less of an issue than with BDE. In .Net, the Jet engine goes away, and Access is being "upgraded" to a single user version of SQL Server - which is pretty robust.
Also, consider Advantage Database Server. It's smaller and cheaper than IB, and offers its own middleware that fits nicely in a single disk install.

Well, if that justification is about transaction speed, then yes, IB will outperform any "desktop" database over a network or in a multi-user scenario - because it is a client-server database.
I don't have any handy benchmark figures comparing IB with Access or Paradox or Btrieve or dBase or any other desktop, but I can't think of a reason not to use IB in a desktop scenario.
As for Advantage Database Server, the web site is at Old UBB Archived Link: Extended Systems - Advantage Database Server .
