Finding work in a down market
As a result of an extended discussion in the H1B thread, I suggested that we start a new topic on brainstorming ideas for finding work in the current market. This includes job hunting tips as well as ideas for software products to develop or software services to offer., , The idea is to have everyone throw out as many ideas as possible with the intention that those who are out of work grab any useful ones and use them to get a job, get a contract with a user, or start developing a product to sell. Any of these are better than sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring!, , So, everyone, if you have any ideas that you are willing to share, please pitch them in now!

Larry!, , Good suggestion! I'll be sure to pass it on., , Fortunately for us in Sacramento, we have both Citgo and BP stations., , Of course, don't wear a T-shirt with this printed on it in a mall in Albany, NY. You could get arrested... Big Grin!

Re: Field Index
If I recall correctly, this happens when you reference a dataset with an invalid field index or invalid field name:, , qrySomething.Field[15].Value where there is no field 15, , qrySomething.FieldByName('somename').Value where 'somename' is not a valid field name.

Re: Where is my dll located?
The DLL has its own Application object. That Application object has a property, Application.Handle which is the Windows module handle for the DLL., , Use , GetModuleFileName (Application.Handle,Path,Pathsize) to get the path of the DLL. You have to provide a buffer for Path and specify the maximum Pathsize. The path will be stored as a pchar type string in Path., , Check out the Win32 help on GetModuleFileName for details., , Hope this helps.

Re: Multiple Units
Merlin,, , Your main form unit makes use of other units by referencing them in a "uses clause". Check the Delphi Help for "uses clause" to get started understanding the relationships among units.

Multiple Units
Can someone show me how to use multiple units in a project? I've written an app in Delphi 6 and I want to seperate the code to make it easier to edit. But I can't figure out how to use multiple units with only the one form., , Thanks for any help., , Merlin

Re: It should be easy
If you could, I would still be very interested in seeing the conversion of the straight code as in my example to 'datamodule version' as there is a positive dearth of this sort of info
rt,, , Send me a zip file of the source for your test program and I will take a look at it. I can't tell what is happening with the limited info we have so far. ldrews@idtdna.com

Re: making functions available between units
pea,, , Rats myself! I jumped in too quick with my last reply. The solution you gave does work. What I was thinking of was:, , type, TFirstClass = type Unit1.TFirstClass;, , This latter structure defines a new type. The structure that you gave simply defines an alias., , Sorry about that. I will try to take a little more care next time.

Re: Delphi's main menu disapeared
Scott,, , Jeez, I didn't even notice that window. It looked like just an advertisement window because the initial header is displayed. Thanks for pointing it out to me. Tell your webmaster to see if he can initialize that window to the end of the message list instead of the beginning., , Thanks., , -Larry Drews

Re: List index
rt,, ,
Ah yes, the alias coding ':' does show my Paradox roots, but I found the ':' used in some Delphi example or other and in the absence of any further information thought it worth a try! Out of interest if I did want to use an alias what is the correct syntax to use with Delphi? ,
If you are using BDE components (which I think you are) then all of those components require you to specify a database name in a form depending on the type of database that you are using. One option is the provide a BDE alias as the database name. This is where you use your alias., , Read up on TDatabase, TTable.DatabaseName, TQuery.Databasename, etc. in the Delphi Help.

Re: Eclass error
rt,,
Debugger Exception Notification, Project MyProject.exe raised exception class EClassNotFound with message 'TfrButtonControl'. Process stopped. Use step or run.,
If I recall correctly, this happens when the dcu/dll/bpl unit containing TfrButtonControl is not on the linker search path. So you can use the button at design time, but when you go to link and execute the compiled version of the TfrButton class is not loaded/registered so Delphi debugger receives and exception., , Try double checking your linker search paths to make sure that they contain the links that you need., , Hope this helps.

Re: Finding work in a down market
Confused So, am I the only one willing to offer suggestions to those who are out of work? C'mon, certainly others of you have ideas, know of companies looking, have tried other techniques that worked. Take a few minutes and contribute them to this thread. Help someone find a job!

Arrays and Checkboxes/ComboBoxes
Does anyone know how to use arrays with Checkboxes/ComboBoxes. What I want is for the user to select an item in a combobox and if they check the checkbox it will stay checked for that item., , Merlin
