RE: Unknown internal operating system error
Also, there is an urban legend   so his [comment] is probably an exageration   no, I've been doing this for about 20 years, and have handled support and problems for probably thousands of people by now.. I don't deal in "urban legends".. and I don't over-state reality and anecdotal history.. you made some good points elsewhere in this thread, but to dismiss expert advice in this manner is rude.. I'll be signing off now..

RE: Paradox 9 / 10 and Windows 7
I appreciate Microsoft's concern for preventing damage to our hard drives by malicious software I have Office 2000 Small Business on my Vista machine.. when I installed Excel, it made me go thru all the "unknown source" verification stuff.. that really inspires confidence in Microsoft (sigh)

Temporary table resource limit
Hi I have to say I'm not much of a DB user. I play mostly in spreadsheets (QPW8 is my fav). Anyways I was assigned the task of importing a txt file with 4.1 million records. I have pumped up the BDE settings and am using the updated BDE. Thru truncating some fields I was able to get 3.8 million records out of the file before a table full error. My goal is to get as many records as possible, and then query them into a variety of smaler tables., My real problem is when I try to do anything with this table .. sort it, query it, whatever. I get a "temporary table resource limit" error. BTW, I'm using PDX 8 though that seems to matter. Ironically I also tried to import this file into Firebird SQL but it choked at around 2 million entries and it's just as finnicky. It seems large tables are taxing to just about everything. I have half a mind to try MySQL on my websirte server location but that's probably just as limited.,

AVG 9 Free and Share Violations
Howdy, I just wanted to warn ya'll about a problem I've been debugging for the last several hours. I upgraded to AVG 9.0 Free on a machine with Paradox with horrific side effects. I tried (several times) to do a regular run of one of my major apps and I got "share violation" errors at random times during the runs. The worst being in the middle of a "compact" and the original .db file was lost! (Thank God for backups :-) Machine is using WinXP sp 3, Paradox 11.0.0.411. App is home grown but very stable and heavily used. (Final result: uninstalled that version of AVG and the problem is gone)

RE: AVG 9 Free and Share Violations
I've used previous versions of AVG Free on the same machine with no problems at all with Paradox in general, AV issues are "performance" issues.. your app will slow down because the AV software is continually looking at the pdox files.. this is evidently something that souldn't be occuring, and there's really no way to casually even guess at what it is.. other than reverting to a prior version of the AV software, and reporting the problem to the AV company, there's not much else that you can do.. I seem to recall, many years ago, that there was an issue like this with one of the basic Symantec control files, when they issued a routine update.. at the point like this, where the users were just starting to complain and try to guess what was wrong, a Symantec rep came to the Pdox forums and told everyone that it was indeed their fault, and a fix was issued very soon after..

RE: Running Paradox for DOS on Vista
first.. Win2000 is the one version that PdoxDOS will *not* run properly on.. just like using PdoxDOS 3.5, "it seems OK to me" isn't good enough.. you are damaging your files, and you usually won't know the extent until it's too late.. second.. single machine or network? .. native NET USE only works on a real network, and only sticks on-reboot with full administrator rights.. I always put it in the startup batch file to invoke it every time.. third.. I have no problem with Output/File.. where are you trying to put the file?.. there are apps like PrintFil and DOS2USB that will send DOS app output directly to a USB printer, too.. finally.. Windows "compatiblity mode" has no bearing here.. everything we're discussing works fine w/o it.. I have a 4xGuide installation/deployment guide on my web site..

RE: Preferences not retained
the re-installing behavior you describe means there's still something in the registry.. there is no need to delete the file if all the registry entires are gone..

RE: Sorting active table on forms
as a generic working theory, you should have keyed tables, with pre-established indexes for the different sorts you want.. then you have simple code to pick a different index to use for the current view..

RE: Paradox X4 and Vista
although I own Pdox9, besides the aborted Runtime module (which I really had purchased it for), I have not really deployed it.  What, if any, are the core program changes that may cause me grief? where did you get the idea that there's something wrong with P9 RT?.. ten years, and I've never heard that comment before.. P9 and P9RT are by far the most commonly deployed versions..

ObjectPAL sort question

the sort only gets forced to a different table if the source table is keyed.. you can add indexes to a keyed table, then view using the index sort order, but you can't re-sort a keyed table.. that comment should give you a variety of alternative approaches and/or ways to correct your current process..
